Ananias was the first to come to the apostles with a portion of the proceeds from the sale. He handed over the money and claimed that he was giving the entire amount of the sale. But Peter, inspired by the Holy Spirit, immediately discerned the lie. He asked Ananias, “Why did you lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the field?” (Acts 5:3). Peter made it clear that it was not necessary for Ananias and Sapphira to give away all of the money, but that the problem lay in their attempt to deceive the apostles and, by extension, God.

Three hours after Ananias’ death, Sapphira arrived, unaware of what had happened to her husband. Upon entering, she was immediately approached by Peter. Knowing that she too was involved in the deception, Peter asked Sapphira about the value of the sale of the field. Sapphira, unaware of what had happened to Ananias, responded with the same lie: “Yes, it was the full amount.”
Peter, with wisdom from the Holy Spirit, confronted her, saying, “How is it that you have agreed to deceive the Spirit of God?” (Acts 5:9). Like Ananias, she also fell down dead, and the young people of the church carried her out and buried her next to her husband. This event served as a clear demonstration that there is no deceiving God, especially when it comes to integrity within the community of faith.
Sapphira’s death not only reflected God’s judgment, but also left an indelible mark on the memory of the early church. This was a turning point for Christians, as it was understood that holiness and truth were fundamental to the spiritual survival of the community. Honesty before God and one another became a fundamental principle of Christian life.

The story of Ananias and Sapphira is a reminder that there is no place for hypocrisy or deceit in the church, and that each of us must live according to the principles of truth and integrity.
Finally, the death of Ananias and Sapphira teaches us that the community of faith must be built on a foundation of mutual trust and commitment to purity before God. We cannot allow the pursuit of recognition or status to divert us from the true purpose of our Christian walk.
