Joseph’s Envy and Dream (Genesis 37:1-11)

Joseph, Jacob’s 11th son, was the most beloved of his father, Jacob, because he was the son of his beloved wife Rachel. This preference generated great envy in his brothers, who began to despise him. Joseph, who was 17 years old, had two dreams in which he saw his brothers bowing down to him, a sign that he would occupy a position of leadership. When he told his brothers about these dreams, their animosity grew even greater, and they began to plot his death.

However, Reuben, the eldest brother, suggested that they throw him into a cistern instead of killing him, with the intention of rescuing him later. While the brothers were eating, a caravan of Ishmaelites appeared, and Judah suggested that they sell Joseph to the merchants instead of letting him die. They followed Judah’s suggestion and sold Joseph for 20 pieces of silver, and when they returned home, they lied to their father, telling him that Joseph had been killed by a wild animal.

Joseph’s Arrival in Egypt (Genesis 37:12-36)

Joseph was taken to Egypt and sold as a slave to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, commander of Pharaoh’s guard. Although he was a slave, Joseph found favor in Potiphar’s eyes, who made him responsible for his household, entrusting him with all his possessions. However, Potiphar’s wife tried to seduce Joseph, but he steadfastly resisted the temptation, refusing to sin against God and his master. Furious at the rejection, Potiphar’s wife falsely accused him of attempted rape, and Joseph was imprisoned.

In prison, Joseph still maintained his faith in God and continued to prosper. He gained the trust of the jailer and was placed in charge of the other prisoners, demonstrating his wisdom and character even under adverse conditions.

Joseph Interprets the Dreams of Pharaoh’s Officials (Genesis 40:1-23)

While he was in prison, two of Pharaoh’s officials, the cupbearer and the baker, were imprisoned. Both had disturbing dreams that same night, and Joseph, with God’s help, interpreted their dreams. For the cupbearer, Joseph predicted that he would be restored to his position, while the baker would be hanged. Joseph asked the cupbearer to remember him when he was restored, but the cupbearer forgot about him after he was released.

Joseph remained in prison for two more years, waiting for his chance to be remembered.

Joseph Interprets Pharaoh’s Dreams (Genesis 41:1-57)


After two years, Pharaoh had two disturbing dreams that no one could interpret. The cupbearer then remembered Joseph and recommended him to Pharaoh. Joseph was called to the palace and, with God’s help, interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams. He explained that Egypt would experience seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine. Joseph suggested to Pharaoh that he store up food during the years of plenty to survive the drought.

Impressed by Joseph’s wisdom, Pharaoh appointed him governor of Egypt, putting him in charge of the country’s administration during the years of famine. Joseph was given a new name, “Zaphenath-Paneah,” and married Asenath, the daughter of an Egyptian priest, with whom he had two sons: Manasseh and Ephraim. He took charge of the distribution of grain and ensured that Egypt survived the famine.

The Arrival of Joseph’s Brothers in Egypt (Genesis 42:1-38)

During the years of famine, Joseph’s brothers in Canaan heard that Egypt had food and decided to travel to buy grain. When they arrived in Egypt, Joseph recognized them immediately, but they did not recognize him, since he was dressed in the clothes of an Egyptian ruler. So Joseph decided to test them.

He accused the brothers of being spies and demanded that they bring their younger brother Benjamin to prove they were not lying. The Return to Egypt and the Testing of Joseph (Genesis 43:1–44:34)

When the brothers returned home and told Jacob what had happened, he initially refused to let Benjamin go to Egypt, fearing that he would lose another son. However, faced with famine, Jacob relented, and Benjamin was taken to Egypt with his brothers. Joseph welcomed them back and prepared a feast in his home, where he continued to test the brothers.

During the banquet, Joseph had his silver cup placed in Benjamin’s sack, and when the brothers left, he accused them of stealing. The Death of Jacob and the Legacy of Joseph (Genesis 47:28-50:26)

Jacob, now an old man, blessed his sons before he died, and especially Joseph, promising him a double portion of their inheritance in recognition of his character and faithfulness. Before he died, Jacob asked to be buried in Canaan, in the cave of Machpelah, with his fathers. Joseph swore an oath that he would take his father’s bones to Canaan.

After Jacob’s death, Joseph’s brothers feared that he would seek revenge for his past actions. However, Joseph reassured them that forgiveness had already been granted, and that God had a greater plan. Joseph assured them that there would be no retaliation, and they would continue to live in peace in Egypt.

Joseph lived another 54 years and saw his sons’ children. Before his death, he asked his brothers that when God delivered them from Egypt, they would take his bones to Canaan. Joseph died in Egypt, was embalmed, and his promise to return to the promised land was fulfilled many years later.
